George MacDonald's fairytale 'The Light Princess' (published in 1864) has been adapted into a musical with music and lyrics by Tori Amos and it being shown at the National Theatre. It's a Romeo & Juliet-esk fairytale about a princess who's lost gravity and the ability to cry and generally have feelings after her mother's death (there are some additions to the original storyline) and a prince who never smiled and was trained as a warrior after his mother's death. It's about their kingdoms getting into a war and of course it's about the princess and the prince finding love.
The stage set is amazing! And the scenes where Althea is floating are really beautiful. How she manages to sing and wiggle while she is only being held by a group of acrobats all dressed in black, is quite a miracle! I really enjoyed the play, the music, the story. I think with a running time of nearly three hours (including the interval), it's just a bit too long for my liking - and my attention span.
